It's been a week, where's my photo? It's comin', it's comin'...

Mdina, my favourite place in Malta. An ancient city, the once-capital that was abandoned in the renaissance for newer, cooler, sea-side digs in Valletta, that has gone pretty much unchanged since then. Narrow, winding streets and alleyways, massive town squares, and everything close and paved, making best use of the space within the walls. The sound of the horses, pulling carriages, trotting past us as we walked into the city, the sounds of their hooves echoing off the stone walls of the houses and palaces lining the streets and off the interior of the city gate really took me back. This was one place where I really wished I'd brought garb, friends and some good musicians :)

It's on the list...

of places I mean to visit someday. I went to elementary school in a Maltese neighbourhood. Never learned a word of Maltese (not that it mattered, I swear most Torontonian/Mississaugan Maltese are quatro-lingual anyway).

It wasn't really on my list. Heck, I didn't even know it existed until meeting the hubby, and until I saw the dot in the ocean on the plane's "where we are now" map, I didn't even really know where it was exactly. And the multilingual thing is not unique to the Toronto area Maltese, the actual Maltese all seemed to know english pretty well and switched freely between our language and theirs.

On the other hand, husband (who is half Maltese himself) and I (100% British, but I do know French) learned not a word of Maltese. Kind of insulting I guess as we were the visitors, but I can't really justify learning a whole language for an 8-day trip either ;)

Anyway, if you ever get to that point on your list, give me a ring and I'll be happy to tell you all the must-see sights. Including the one you have to book months in advance that we unfortunately didn't learn existed until we got there - drat. Well, if we ever go back, it'll be on the list.

Maltese is one of those weird languages (like Finnish). I gather that it is a cross between Romance/Greek and Arabic.

Considering that it would take months (if not years] for me to save the money to go, booking that long in advance would not be a problem.
