Yet another October passes in the "Texas of the North" with no little candy-grubbing goblins to be seen. Last year we had less than 5 kids. I think it was 3 but I didn't record it. Pumpkins were shockingly expensive last year, as that is produce, and therefore not something we can actually produce. I think all we can grow here is wheat, corn and cows. As I knew they'd cost a fortune I didn't even bother looking for one this year. I might go out today and try to pick one up on sale so I can make pumpkin seeds for snacking at least.

Anyway, we left our porch light on, but didn't make any other effort. One of my neighbours had a pumpkin, maybe two or three others had their lights on. I think I have about 12 neighbours I can see from my porch and ALL THE REST had their lights off!?!?! No wonder kids don't come here. Sure, the houses are close together, but so few are generous. Anyway, this year we had a whopping 0 kids. I wonder if I'd put out a pumpkin if I'd have gotten more. Might ask the neighbours who did if they actually got anyone.

I wonder, is it like this everywhere in Edmonton, and if so, why? Do people not bother because they know that no kids will come, or do kids not bother because they know no one will be offering candy anyway. Is there a feeling of religious protest over the holiday, or is it simply not as much a part of the social fabric and tradition as it was/is in Ontario? Is it because the weather is generally too cold for it to be much fun (though I have to admit, this year was pretty mild)? Or is it just my grumpy, evil neighbours stifling things in this specific area?

On a somewhat related note, I really do hate my neighbours. Sigh.
