Update-O-Rama

Big old life-update. This got rather winded so behind the cut it goes.

New job:
Still going well. Learning more every day and gaining some autonomy. Boss is swamped and I seem to be not displeasing her, so all is good.

Roller Derby:
First exhibition bout on July 20th was a BLAST!!! A few friends showed up to watch but not nearly enough for my taste. I didn't suck this time, which was a nice change. Was actually able to keep up with the pack and even provide some assists at times, which felt good. Pics are on facebook. I may bring some over here later, but not now as I am at work (on lunch, but Facebook is blocked).

Lost our practice space this week as the city iced over its rinks. We are now scrambling to find a new practice facility. Anyone know of any office/warehouse/old store/hangar spaces that might be willing to rent out by the hour a few nights a week? In the meantime we'll be practicing outside - sigh.

SCA:
Quad is this weekend. I'm looking forward to it and really, really, really hoping it doesn't rain there as it is raining here right now. No new garb made for anyone, though I did spend most of last week washing and ironing all the linen in the house so when I get up the motivation it will be all ready to go.

Am teaching 2 classes this year. Fingerloop braiding (people don't ever seem to tire of that old class) and pick-up inkle weaving. My last weaving class at Quad was frustrating at best, so we'll see how this one goes.

Was wanting to fight crossbow this war, but ran out of time to get authorized. Ah well, I guess I'll be in the shield wall again. Beats being on the side-lines.

Beagles:
Gave us a scare a few weeks ago. When I got back from Ontario everyone was in pretty bad shape. Lizzy was throwing up a few times a day and was runny from the other end. Anna was refusing to walk and whimpering when touched. At one point she walked clumsily down the hall, fell over, and once down refused to so much as stretch her neck to get food.

Lizzy was prescribed some tummy-settling medications and canned food (which she says is yummy and humans think is stinky). She was nauseous a few more days and the vet attributed it to stress (maybe she thought that I was never coming back because Jason came back alone and then she lost Anna while she was at the vet all day).

Anna was taken in for X-rays, a day of observation and blood-work. Towards the end of the day they had her walking again, but only to follow yummy canned food. Nothing odd came up in any tests. She spent the rest of the week on an opiate and anti-inflammatories and was ordered to rest. The first few days she complied. By mid-week she was all perky and uncontrollable.

It's a few weeks later now and everyone seems fine, so who knows what was wrong.

Miscellany
Husband still seems to have a tiny bit of his cold and coughs occasionally. I am completely over it. He's still in crunch and being worked to death by his company. I see him rarely.

The weather has been surprisingly hot for the last month and a bit. While it has made me lazy as a slug, I have really enjoyed the warmth. Seems to be over as of now (wow was it ever chilly this morning!). This is apparently the 20th anniversary of "Black Monday", a day where a giant tornado ripped through Edmonton and killed many people. Some people in the office who remember it are a little jumpy as the sky has been dark and foreboding all day. Last weekend we had an amazing T-storm. Apparently one strike was so close that it burnt our neighbours' plants. And of course we were playing WoW and refusing to log-off and unplug the computers. That "bang" when the neighbour's yard incinerated did make us turn off all the electrical devices and go to bed. Beagles were completely unconcerned.

Taste of Edmonton ended last weekend. I will write notes later so I can remember for next year what was good and what was best to take a pass on. Beagles didn't get that much food from strangers, which was disappointing for them.

Had our first ever Global Freeloaders visitor which turned out to be a rather nice experience. She was visiting from Brisbane and planned to take the train from Edmonton to Vancouver through the Rockies. Cool trip. She stayed with us two nights, fed Jason lunch one day, went to Roller Derby and was off to the train on Saturday morning. After I dropped her off I went home and slept so I would be ready for Ivan and Zara's Tiki party!

Tiki party was awesome. I got smashed-drunk and got to enjoy both a hot tub and some time by a bonfire in comfy chairs. The house looked great. They painted giant tiki murals on the wall, hung lanterns everywhere, filled the yard with tiki torches, and the deck was spectacular. I have some MAJOR deck-envy. I also never realized how large their yard was. It's a strange shape and used to be really over-grown. It cleaned up good!

Oh, and about that mold... the landlord's solution was a simple coat of paint. I fully expect it to mold over again and am just not going to use that closet until it does. Coming up with alternate storage for all my stuff is proving difficult.

Duty calls and lunch is ending. Later.

Wow

Glad to hear things are good at work and that you are out of Dell Hell. I'm also glad to hear your puppies are okay! That is really scary about Anna, I'm glad everything worked out.

Roller Derby sounds like lots of fun! It's too bad you're out of a practice space. I hope you find one soon. I imagine it's hard to practice outside...Glad to hear you are fighting, I haven't put on my kit in a while now. I won't be fighting at Pennsic either, I refuse to fight there unless I've had some practice. I'll miss you at Pennsic this year, I leave on the 7th.

Take care hun,
Hugs!
Heather

Yeah, I don't think I'd fight at Pennsic without a bit of practice either. I did the one year, and it was perfectly safe, but we WAY outnumbered the other side. To the point where Naga laid down and took a nap on the field mid-fight. The only way I could have hurt myself there was dehydration. Under normal circumstances I believe it's probably better not to be a baby seal.

Kinda worried about Quad this year, heck, worried if my armour will even fit as it has been a year since I put it on.

Sorry I didn't see you guys when I came home. I was really looking forward to it - sigh.

having been there done that

you know Jason's "cold" could be a mold allergy - they have the same symptoms. may be worth getting a mold testing kit online and checking it out. can't believe the solution! yikes!

see you soon! i signed up for your fingerloop class but it is against the smocking one which i desperately needs - i may have to come and see you to get a private lesson at a later date!

Class-shmass, just pop by my tent and I'll teach you any time you like. With just the two of us I can probably teach it in a matter of minutes. The only reason it's a 1 hour class is the cat-herding that is organizing and instructing multiple scatter-brained SCA people with no hand-eye co-ordination.

About the mold testing kit... do tell me more. Is it testing for air-borne mold, or just for mold on a surface (which we know is there, I don't need a test for that)? How much do these kits cost? Where does one obtain one?

i actually have lots of materials on it - i'll bring them plus fiber. i really want to make a lace for my flemish gowns!

the best way for mold testing is to get a certified hygienist in to do it - for your purposes since you know the source I think this outfit would work http://www.moldbacteria.com/moldtesting_for_homeowners.html and it's not that expensive (40-50$). At the very least it gives you something to pursue with your landlord.

if it was hidden, you'd need an ambiant air sample. this place does them but the site scares me. I think if I wanted to go that route I'd find an industrial contractor to do it and it would run at a cost of several hundreds of dollars.

you need to identify if the mold is bad for your health - so even though you know the mold is there you have no idea what it is.

I agree- it's likely an allergy, and it's only going to get worse if all they've done is paint it over. I have that allergy, and it's definately not fun.
