Moldgate

This weekend I decided to go through my closet and evict anything that was worn out, unstylish or too small. Large task (as anyone who has seen my closet knows) but not unreasonable for a day's work. Or at least so it seemed when I started...

Upon reaching the back of the closet and pulling out the last item, I discovered it was destroyed by mold. It was then that I looked down and realized, in horror, that my comics were stored at the bottom of the closet on that side. So much for putting them upstairs instead of in the basement, with the thought that they would be more likely to be safe from water damage there. Hindsight is 20/20 eh?

Anyway, the boxes are a write-off. The comics inside appear not to have gotten wet, but they've really picked up the smell by being in proximity. I'm unsure how to get the smell out. Am also unsure as to whether I should try or not. Is this a sign that the universe is telling me to move on? Do I chuck the whole lot without even going through it? Do I go through with a savage editing streak and only keep the ones that are really meaningful and very much loved? Or do I try to salvage the lot and change my storage methods to accommodate things like leaks in places you'd least expect? Does anyone know how to get a moldy/musty smell out of books?

Anyway, now living with all the contents of that rather large closet absolutely all over the apartment. Suitcases and clothes racks everywhere. Comics stacked in the living room until I decide their fate. So much for getting the place in relatively good shape in the last few weeks. Have called the landlord to get it fixed and am decidedly not impressed. Was up until 2am dealing with it, so am VERY sluggish today. Grrrr

In other news, Ratatouille was great. Go see it.

#1. Lee Valley has this great silicone stuff that you can use to absorb the moisture out of drawers/rooms etc. One of their specialty flyers suggested to get the mildew smell out of an item, put it into a sealed container with a pkg of the silicone stuff for a few days. I'm not sure if you could find something similar locally. If not, let me know as John works 2 minutes from Lee Valley.

#2. I live with a comic book pack rat...I can't offer my opinion on whether to keep or not. :-)

#3. I agree, Ratatouille was a great movie. Sarah and I went last weekend. I highly recommend it.

If you Google "taking smell out of books", you will find ooodles of suggestions. BTW I've used the seal in a container with baking soda trick and it worked.

Ratatouile was awesome - agreed!

I'd save as many of those comics as I could. You hung onto them for this long, why not a little longer?

You could try those silica packs that comes with your dried seaweed, that should protect your comics from further molding.
