Special kind of magic
Jan. 27th, 2007 02:14 pmIt's a REALLY good day today. So good that I might even have to say I believe in a higher power, miracles, and blessings from the gods.
The night before Christmas Eve, I'm packing my things to go home, and I hear the click of death from my notebook hard drive. No worries, i'll just back it up and not take it on the trip. I put Jason in charge of backing it up while I pack - bad idea. He manages to et 6/27 gigs off the machine before it clicks its last. And 5.5 of the 6G is nothing but games or drivers. Entirely useless stuff. He gets my website and e-mail off, which is faboo since that is the only stuff that gets updated on a regular basis. And I did do a backup in August, so there's not too much lost. A few pictures, some new music. Nothing I can't live without.
The major bummer - all the Avacal accounting crap is on there. And not backed up of course.
I end up wasting the entire night before my flight, not packing like I should be, but trying to get a sign of life out of my non-responsive notebook. I even tried booting from a DOS floppy, real old-school solutions. "drive not found" is all she has to say to me.
Today I figure it's about time to tackle this Avacal crap. So I figure aw hell, why not fire it up and see what happens? And the notebook starts up with not a sound of complaint. All it does is show me a notice on start up "Windows has recovered from a serious error". The drive was physically pooched! Clicking like it was scratching the plates all to hell. I was looking up the cost of clean rooms and figuring it would have to be all pulled apart and still might not be recoverable. And it starts up with a nonchalant little "Windows had some issues" message - unbelievable.
So yeah, miracles do happen and I am a very happy person. Anyone want to join me at New City tonight to celebrate the miraculous healing of my notebook?
