48 hours before my sister's arrival and I see a dark brown speck in Lizzy's fur. I assume it's just more of the spices from earlier this week stuck to her (I've been picking that out of her fur for some days now), so I just pull it off and drop it on my empty snack plate. And the spot jumps!!! A lot! I try to smush the spot, it continues to jump. Smush, smush, smush, smash! Finally it stops jumping so I can get a look at it, the legs are still moving. It's a flea!!!! 48 hours before I have company coming for a week and I've found my first ever flea!!!!! Aaaaaarrrrrghhhh!

Interestingly, fleas are a lot bigger than I thought they would be. I always assumed tiny little specks, not something that would look very clearly like the pictures (if your eyes are good enough).

Made a late-night run to the 24 hour Wal-Mart to pick up a flea comb and some spot treatment (we don't do collars). Ran the comb over both doggies and failed to find any other fleas. Hopefully I just caught the only one and there are no eggs or disasters to come. Both doggies are now treated.

And to think just yesterday I was musing at how lovely it was to have butterflies in my yard in February. Apparently there is a down-side to all this nice weather and living things in the deep of winter. That said, I'm walking around in an uber-short waitress dress today without even my customary thigh-high socks to go with it. So I guess I'll take the lumps if that's the upside.
